A profound stillness enveloped the room, a quiet that compelled her to pause and reflect. The gentle melody of the music played softly in the background, while the early morning light filtered through the window, casting a shadow across the small wooden table and her cherished cup of tea. The children clung to the remnants of their dreams, the dog nestled at her feet, and her husband was cocooned under his grandmother’s quilt.
She sat motionless, captivated by an indescribable sense of peace. A sweetness and warmth enveloped her, filling her with a profound sense of tranquility. It was a holy moment, a time when she could feel the presence of God. She knew that she was loved unconditionally, effortlessly, and intentionally, just as a father loves his daughter.
Life can become so complicated, filled with unexpected demands and distractions that prevent us from finding time for the most important thing—time alone with our Father. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, losing sight of the importance of sitting in his presence, lounging at his feet, and spending quality time getting to know him, loving him, and surrendering to him
Holy moments are found in the stillness of our minds, in the quieting of our hearts, in the intentional discipline of seeking God.
In Luke 10:38-42 we are told about two sisters, Martha and Mary. Martha was the one who got things done, serving Jesus and his disciples, making sure the meal was ready, and taking care of all the little details.
Mary, on the other hand, wanted to sit at Jesus’ feet. She used that precious time to be still, to grow closer to him, and to learn more about this amazing man. She didn’t want to get caught up in the busyness of his visit, the preparations, or her sister’s request for her to do more. Instead, she chose to be present, to calm her heart, and to focus on God.
Finding God in a busy world takes some planning, a little effort, and a lot of patience. But Jesus says in Luke 10:42B,
"Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
Jesus confirms that Mary had it right. his desire for our lives is time spent in his presence, at his feet, in relationship with him.
But how do we make time?
What do we do while in his presence?
What are Jesus’ promises for our time together?
Making Time
Jesus himself was the best example of making time for God. He was often found stealing away to a quiet place to pray and worship.
Luke 5:16 shares,
"But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed."
We need to get away from the distractions to a quiet (lonely) place. A place that allows us to focus. Maybe a cozy chair in the morning, before the family stirs. Or a walk around the neighborhood, or a hike in the woods, just you and Jesus. Or maybe a quiet evening, when the day is over, and you can rest in your Father’s arms.
You might only have a few minutes, but make time—daily, intentionally, consistently. Jesus is waiting for you.
In His Presence
Three things we can focus on while we are in the presence of God: prayer, praise, and pondering his goodness.
Colossians 4:2 tells us,
"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful."
Let’s make the most of our quiet moments with God by praying and sharing our lives with him. We can talk about everything, from our needs (which he already knows) to our dreams and those little joys that make us happy.
Psalm 117:1-2 gives us another hint at what we should focus on during our time with the Lord,
"Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!"
Spend some time thanking God for everything he’s done and is still doing for you. The Lord really enjoys hearing the praises of his people. Whether you listen to worship music, sing, or pray quietly in your mind, or even sing or pray out loud, don’t forget to praise!
Thinking about God, looking at his character and nature, helps us learn more about who Jesus is. Reading the Bible, doing a daily devotion, or journaling are all great ways to reflect on God.
His Promise
James 4:8 shares God’s promise for our time with him.
"Come close to God, and God will come close to you…"
Spending time with God deepens our connection and strengthens our bond with our loving Father. Our faith and trust grow, burdens lighten, pain is seen differently, and our lives are changed.
I know many of you are facing tough times. Times that make you feel afraid, question your faith, and wonder if I have the time to be still, just hanging on!
I encourage you, even when things are really hard, to carve out time to be with Jesus. Because it is during these moments that we need to focus on him the most. We need to sit in his presence, relax at his feet, spend time getting to know him, loving him, and giving him our all.
"Therefore, do not worry or be anxious (perpetually uneasy, distracted), saying, ‘What are we going to eat?’ or ‘What are we going to drink?’ or ‘What are we going to wear?’ For the [pagan] Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; [but do not worry,] for your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But first and most importantly, seek (aim at, strive after) his kingdom and his righteousness [his way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Matthew 6:31-34 Amplified Bible (AMP)
Please don’t let the hustle and bustle of life pull you away. Find a moment to connect with the One who understands your deepest desires, your loneliness, and your greatest sorrows.
In return, he will reveal himself, his passions, and his purpose for your life, and you will find yourself resting in a holy moment.
Blessings,
